Psychiatric Social Work in Great Britain (1939-1962)

چکیده
With exemplary thoroughness Noel Timms has surveyed the history, annals anCl publications of psychiatric social workers and attempts to answer the searching question: "Who are these creatures and what do they do?" "Psychiatric social work began both as a specialised clinical function with1^ psychiatry and as an attempt to bring the 'psychiatric viewpoint' into social workMr. Timms goes on to refer to "a concern for psychiatric illness and its treatmei1 and also... a recognition of something much wider, namely the significance 0 human relationship in the problems presented by the clients of different socia agencies". It is in this latter aspect that psychiatric social work has made its wide5 impact, but in the 35 years of its history this has changed from its exclusive featufe to a common characteristic of all forms of social casework. At this point in time, with new developments in training for social work and 1,1 the social services, when we need to deploy our scarce resources to the be5 advantage and make efficient use of specialised workers, it is appropriate that ^'e should take stock. Chapters giving details of numbers of psychiatric social work^s trained and their careers, as well as the history of the Association of Psychiatr,c Social Workers and its public influence, provide the facts on which we can bas? this assessment.

From a chill grey day in London to be transported overnight to tropical heat and brilliant colours in Nigeria is enough to take one's breath away. During the three weeks of our stay we never lost that sense of wonder and strange beauty. At the invitation of Dr. Lambo, who made a memorable contribution to the N.A.M.H.
